Geita. Only 30 per cent of all medicine the government supplies to hospitals and health centres reaches patients, the minister for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Ummy Mwalimu, said this yesterday during the tour of Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who launched a building for emergency patients at Geita Regional Designated Referral Hospital.
She said the government had been making effort to supply medicine to hospitals, but only 30 per cent of it reached patients and 40 per cent was sold secretly.
She vowed the current government would not condone any wrongdoing and her ministry would not tolerate any dishonest staff, who received and sold drugs and left people to blame their government.
Dr Mwalimu said all the medicine supplied by the government would have special marks, expressing that anyone caught selling it would face legal action. She ordered the Medical Store Department (MSD) staff not to unload drugs at health centres if a health committee was not present. In another development, the minister said expectant mothers were still giving birth at home to the extent of risking their lives, expressing that until now only 52 per cent of the expectant mothers were delivering in hospitals.
Speaking to the hospital staff and members of the public, Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan called upon health sector workers to work in accordance with their profession and not forgetting diligence so as to ensure that patients were provided with good health services.
She said drug theft in hospitals was committed by dishonest staff, who tarnished their profession and so she called upon nurses to stop using bad language that despaired patients.
She said although the government was making effort in reducing child and maternity mortality, maternal mortality was still high due to delivery complications, thus calling on the the minister to sit down with health experts to know what the obstacle was in getting rid of the problem.
